“HOCHUL REFUSES TO PRIORITIZE A PEOPLE-CENTERED BUDGET”: INVEST IN OUR NEW YORK CAMPAIGN RESPONDS TO BUDGET EXTENSION REQUEST

ALBANY, NY – After Governor Hochul refused to prioritize a people-centered budget, forcing the Legislature to pass a budget extender, Carolyn Martinez-Class, campaign manager of the Invest in Our New York Campaign, released the following statement: Governor Hochul has demonstrated she is willing to hold up a $230 billion budget to do the bidding of her billionaire supporters while working-class New Yorkers continue to be crushed by NY’s unaffordability crisis. We can, as the Governor claims to want to do, make New York ‘more affordable, more livable, and safer.’ We can keep our public transportation systems affordable, permanently house tens of thousands of New Yorkers, support New York’s workforce, and more by enacting overwhelmingly supported tax increases on the ultra-rich and wealthy corporations. But Governor Hochul is choosing to starve our communities of resources to protect her billionaire donors’ wealth. She’d rather strip public schools of funding and impose regressive taxes on workers, commuters, and college students. We urge the Senate and Assembly to continue fighting for their constituents during budget negotiations and call on the Governor to follow their lead.
