Gov. Hochul Should Remember that New York Includes More Than New York City

In response to news that the state will provide another $4 billion in funding to close New York City’s budget deficit, Invest in Our New York Campaign Manager Brahvan Ranga released the following statement:
“Make no mistake: Gov. Hochul would not have backed a New York City pied-à-terre tax or provided this ‘new’ state funding without Mayor Mamdani’s leadership and the enormous pressure from our movement to tax the ultra-rich. While these represent critical investments in the city, the governor should remember that New York’s fiscal crisis extends beyond New York City — just ask the upstate localities staring down property-tax increases, hiring freezes and service cuts, to say nothing of the thousands of New Yorkers facing the loss of their healthcare and food assistance due to federal cuts.
“People’s lives are at stake. Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie must hold the line in budget negotiations, and the governor must agree to a statewide pied-à-terre tax, reduction of the pass-through-entity credit, and all of the progressive revenue in the one-house budgets.”
