New Yorkers, Advocates, Union Members, and Elected Officials Rally for Investments, not Cuts, to Essential Programs and Services

NEW YORK, NY — In downtown Manhattan, elected officials, community groups, unions, and everyday New Yorkers rallied to demand a 2024 state budget that prioritizes working-class people, rejects shortsighted spending cuts and spending freezes to essential services, and invests in housing, healthcare and more.

“Working families are struggling just to get by while the mega-rich keep getting richer,” said Alicé Nascimento, Director of Campaigns at New York Communities for Change, a steering committee organization of IONY. “The spending freezes and budget cuts proposed by Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul are incredibly harmful to working-class communities. The Governor and State Legislature must pass a budget that ensures the super-wealthy pay what they owe so that we can raise the necessary public funds to fund the programs and services we all rely on. A majority of New Yorkers agree: we need to tax the mega-rich so we can invest in our New York”
