“This week’s announcement from the State of Massachusetts underscores that taxes on the ultra-wealthy are not only politically feasible, they are a fiscal and moral imperative. Unfortunately, Governor Hochul has failed to demonstrate the necessary leadership in the fight for economic justice.
“Time and time again, Governor Hochul has missed the opportunity to ensure our state has the resources to invest in our students and schools, bolster our healthcare system, keep families housed, support those experiencing homelessness, and enable decisive action against the existential threat of climate change. This is particularly concerning when we consider that New York has the largest wealth gap in the country.
“The recent budget negotiation has underscored the need for an Executive that prioritizes economic justice, not just as a campaign promise but as a policy imperative. New York has the potential to lead the nation in addressing climate change, reducing education disparities, closing the racial wealth gap, increasing housing affordability, and more. We are hopeful that the successes in Massachusetts will inspire Governor Hochul and all lawmakers to enact a state-wide ultra-rich wealth tax in the upcoming budget.”
